Virginia Tech Crisis: Podcast and Presentation Slides

Aug 22 2007

A highlight from the EduWeb Conference in Baltimore was learning firsthand of the challenges faced by the Virginia Tech web team. A keynote speaker was Michael Dame, Director of Virginia Tech’s Web Communications.

I can’t begin to imagine the kind of challenges brought on by a gunman killing 32 people and injuring 25. I try to envision myself in his position on that day and the ensuing weeks, and I can’t.

They key of course, is to be prepared. My campus is currently re-evaluating it’s crisis/emergency plans, and yours probably is to. The university website is no doubt an important aspect of that planning, and we can learn a great deal about web crisis communications by listening to the audio recording of Michael Dame’s keynote and viewing his presentation slides.

Sidenote:

Almost every presentation from the EduWeb Conference has a podcast or powerpoint available for download. …Good luck trying to be productive today :)
