I will start at a college gig in just a few weeks so was glad to see this. After 20 years in corporate, I am excited for the change! Wish me luck.

Ok....let's talk reality here. University life can be good, easy and interesting. It brings a low paycheck, a very uneducated support staff, and a group of professors that think because they are an expert in their subject matter that they know yours as well. It's eye opening!

Reading this blew my mind. I have a BA Graphic Design degree from Flagler College (St. Augustine, FL), and I have been doing Corporate work... design firm work... resort work... newspaper work... everything under the sun for the past 2 years. I have been absolutely miserable working insane overtime, or unemployed. Everything for the most part has been contract work. I've gotten to the point where I'm ready to retrain / return to school to try something else because my degree seems to be as useful in the job market as toilet paper.

What you're doing at a University sounds right up my alley. My biggest dislike is the overtime hours, working 50-80 hours a week. 40 hours - 45 hours flat, sounds great. I can actually plan my life and get things done without wondering if I'll have to cancel the next day.

My only question, and I know it is faux pas to ask, but what kind of pay range are you receiving, and which area of the US are you working in? I know pay changes by region. I'll be working in Florida so I'm trying to get a feel.

The living expenses in Florida pretty much require me to have a 45,000+ income, which I have had off and on... leaving me with about 15-20k a year, going from apartments to living with family again.

So my only question is pay. If this job pays enough for me to live on my own, fantastic, I'll start web design training in the Fall.

Appreciate any info, I bet you get a lot of hits from here!

Well having ALWAYS worked in a corperate environment i can say, It will be the step in my career i take just before retirement.

There comes a time in every I.T guys life where he needs to just kick back and relish in the fact that we will probably never be the CEO of anything and we should all just get paid to do what we love at our own pace.

All of those are great reasons... another for me is working with the students. I have five student employees that report to me. They definitely keep life interesting!

What a FABULOUS article! A co-worker shared this post with me, and I'm glad she did. It is always a good idea to sit back and really think about how good we have it in our state jobs, and how bad it could be. I came from corporate as the result of a lay off, and I have been interviewing applicants who were displaced as a result of downsizing...so many, in fact, it is sickening. I love it here and appreciate you reminding me just why!
